01 - OVERVIEW

01 - OVERVIEW

Saving made satisfying

Saving made satisfying

Banking is synonymous with seriousness: muted colours, formal language, interfaces built to reassure rather than delight. Nova sought out to change this by introducing playful features and interactivity not typically seen in banking.

The brief asked for a clear, playful bapp that still held the trust financial services demands, without tipping into anything that reads as careless with someone's money.

02 - THE PROBLEM

02 - THE PROBLEM

Trust starts from zero

Trust starts from zero

Trust in banking is gained largely through years of external acts of service and marketing, regulated operations and physical branches that demonstrate validity and good intent. Interfaces are given leniency depending on that external reputation. The problem with a new banking app like Nova, is that it has no external validation and is solely reliant on the interface, especially for this challenge.

Introducing large amounts of playfulness for an app that has no footing in the world of finance needs to strike a fine balance to maintain the trust needed to function as a business.

Down to earth where it matters

Down to earth where it matters

To address the initial friction of unlocking and navigation, Tiempo utilises native iOS features by enabling users to log sets directly from the lock screen, bypassing a large portion of the issue - logging a set is not a cause for security concern hence the decision.

Second is to completely strip large parts of info that is commonly disclosed to users when tracking a workout. When completing an exercise the user does not need to know what their last exercise is or have the ability to enter data for it when they might not come to it for over an hour.

Fun that pays off

Savings' playfulness takes the shape of light gamification: loyalty points earned through saving activity, redeemable for real rewards. Points reward genuine progress, consistent saving, hitting a goal, not just opening the app, so the system nudges good fiscal habits rather than pure engagement.

No phone, no problem

No phone, no problem

Nova had to work the same across phone, tablet, and desktop. Mobile keeps only what's essential to actually using the app, so a few widgets were cut there, useful but not necessary. Those come back on tablet and desktop, where the extra space lets them add value without crowding what matters.

NEXT STEPS

Onboard in style

This brief was pre-scoped, with no room to expand past what shipped. Onboarding is the obvious next step: it's the first place a new user meets Nova's tone, and the space theme has the most room to shine before the app has to settle into its more restrained, everyday register.

Detailed feature mapping

The screens themselves were pre-defined, so feature selection and how they'd integrate into the wider app was never actually up for exploration. A full version of Nova would start there: what belongs in the app, what doesn't, and how it all fits together as one coherent banking system rather than a set of individual screens.
